Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center

Board-Certified Dermatologists & Aesthetic Dermatology located in Downtown DC, Washington, DC

Platelets within your blood release growth factors to promote healing in areas of tissue damage. When you inject them into areas where they’re needed in the form of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), they can initiate tissue healing or hair growth. At Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center in Washington, DC, the team of board-certified dermatologists uses PRP for hair growth and skin rejuvenation procedures. To find out if you’re a good candidate for PRP, call or book a visit online today.

PRP Q & A

What is PRP?

PRPPRP is a substance containing only certain components from your blood. Your provider at Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center removes the red and white blood cells, leaving only platelets and plasma.

The platelets in your blood are largely responsible for initiating the healing process. When you get an injury, your platelets release growth factors to signal nearby cells to repair the damage.

The plasma is the liquid substance that carries red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets through your circulatory system. It makes PRP an easy-to-inject liquid.

It’s important to remove all red and white blood cells from PRP because they can cause inflammation and impair healing.

How is PRP made?

When you come to Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center for a PRP procedure, the first step is a blood draw. Your provider collects a sample of your blood via a vein in your arm.

Once the blood sample is ready, your provider places it in a machine called a centrifuge that separates it into layers. The centrifuge spins rapidly to separate the cells.

One layer contains a high concentration of platelets suspended in plasma. Your provider removes this layer and prepares it for your aesthetic procedure.

Which procedures are available using PRP?

Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center offers two aesthetic procedures with PRP to enhance your appearance.

PRP for hair loss

Losing your hair prematurely can impact your self-esteem, whether you have a single thinning area or balding all over your scalp. PRP injections in your scalp can help promote follicle healing and increased hair growth.

Is PRP safe?

PRP is very safe because the blood components come straight from your own body. This means there’s little chance of getting an infection from the product.

Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center follows safety protocols closely to avoid contaminating the sample.
