Rosacea Q & A

What is rosacea?

rosaceaRosacea is a skin condition that causes redness and flushing on your face. The symptoms most often occur on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. The redness may also spread to your ears, chest, and back.

With rosacea, you may experience weeks of flare-ups followed by weeks or months of remission.

Though there’s no cure for rosacea, there are many effective treatments that help prevent or minimize flare-ups.

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

Rosacea symptoms vary in type and severity. When evaluating symptoms, dermatologists categorize your rosacea into one or more of the four distinct subtypes.

Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea

With erythematotelangiectatic rosacea, your symptoms may include redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels.

Papulopustular rosacea

Facial swelling, redness, and pimples are common symptoms of papulopustular rosacea.

Phymatous rosacea

Phymatous rosacea affects the tone and texture of your skin. With this type of rosacea, your facial skin may be thick and bumpy.

Ocular rosacea

Ocular rosacea is a subtype of rosacea that affects the eyes. Symptoms include red, irritated eyes and swollen eyelids.

What causes rosacea?

Researchers are still investigating the underlying cause of rosacea, but theorize the skin condition may occur due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

If you have rosacea, you may notice certain activities trigger your flare-ups. Common rosacea triggers include:

  • Change in temperature
  • Too much sun
  • Hot drinks
  • Spicy food
  • Alcohol
  • Exercise
  • Cosmetic products

Anyone can develop rosacea. You may be at greater risk of getting the common skin condition if it runs in your family, you smoke, or you have a history of frequent sunburns.
