What is human papillomavirus (HPV)?

HPV is a virus that affects different parts of the body. It’s often spread by intimate sexual contact but can be spread via skin-to-skin contact, too.

HPV requires professional care because it increases the risk of certain types of cancer. Thankfully, early detection and treatment can significantly reduce your risk.

What are the symptoms of HPV?

HPV rarely presents symptoms. Many people with the infection don’t know it, so the virus can easily spread.

Even so, there are telltale signs to watch for, including warts. Warts are tough, round growths that can form anywhere on the body. All warts, including genital warts and plantar warts, are caused by a strain of HPV.

How is HPV diagnosed?

The Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center team uses a patient-centric approach to diagnose HPV. First, they review your medical records, ask about your symptoms, and complete a physical exam.

Genital and plantar warts are usually identified during a skin exam, but your provider might also remove part or all of a wart and send it to a nearby lab for analysis. The lab examines the wart under a microscope to determine the strain of HPV and guide treatment.

How is HPV treated?

The Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center team develops personalized treatment plans that focus on patient well-being.

There’s no way to eliminate the virus from your body. However, several treatments can remove visible warts. They could suggest:

  • Cryosurgery (freezing the warts)
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)
  • Electrocautery (burning the warts with an electrical current)
  • Laser therapy
  • Cone biopsy
  • Trichloroacetic acid (a chemical treatment that removes warts)

The team might prescribe topical treatments if you have multiple warts on different parts of your body. Topical treatments contain medicated ingredients that destroy the warts, causing them to shrink and fall off.

Can HPV be prevented?

The easiest way to prevent HPV is by practicing safe sex. The Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center team recommends using protection during intercourse and scheduling routine screenings. Likewise, if you have HPV, tell your partners so they’re aware.
