Which Skin Rejuvenation Treatment Is Right for Me?

Which Skin Rejuvenation Treatment Is Right for Me?

Having beautiful, healthy-looking skin isn’t easy, especially as the effects of aging take their toll. Fortunately, today there are many options for rejuvenating your skin and restoring it to a more radiant, more youthful appearance.

In fact, there are so many options, sometimes it can be difficult to decide which treatment is the best choice for helping you achieve your goals.

At Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center, our board-certified dermatologists, Todd E. Perkins, MD, and Edward H. Stolar, MD, offer multiple skin rejuvenation treatment options at their Washington, DC, practice, which means patients of all ages and all skin types can enjoy beautiful results.

Here’s how we can help you decide which option is best for you.

Aging and your skin

As you age, your skin undergoes a lot of changes. Many of those changes are influenced in part by years of exposure to the sun and other environmental factors.

In fact, about 90% of the visible signs of aging you see in your skin are due to photoaging — aging effects that happen when your skin is repeatedly exposed to the sun’s UV rays.

UV energy affects the skin in different ways, including interfering with the production of a strong protein called collagen. Collagen fibers form a supportive network for your skin, keeping it supple, firm, and resilient. UV rays weaken collagen fibers, causing them to break down.

At the same time, your body produces less collagen as you get older, and combined, these effects usher in wrinkles, lines, and sagging skin.

Photoaging causes other changes, too, making your skin feel drier and rougher, while hastening the development of dark spots and broken blood vessels called capillaries. And of course, scars and stretch marks take their toll, too.

To rejuvenate your skin, you need a treatment plan that addresses the issues that are affecting your skin.

Skin rejuvenation treatment options

Having a variety of skin rejuvenation treatments to choose from is important, because everyone's skin ages differently. A treatment that works for one person may fall short of expectations for someone else.

Our doctors are experienced in an array of options, including these popular treatments.

Microneedling

Microneedling uses a special device studded with tiny needles to create hundreds of “micro injuries” in your skin. These injuries trigger natural healing responses, including the development of collagen fibers, to help skin look and feel firmer and smoother.

We often combine microneedling with an application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for added benefits.

Radiofrequency therapy

This state-of-the-art treatment uses radiofrequency (RF) energy waves to target deeper layers of your skin — the layers where collagen is produced. By gently heating deeper tissues, RF helps your skin ramp up collagen development to smooth out lines and tone lax skin.

VirtueRF®

VirtueRF combines the benefits of microneedling and radiofrequency energy into one state-of-the-art platform, so you can reap the rewards of both treatments in a single session. The dual technologies enable RF energy to penetrate to deeper layers of the skin, reducing superficial signs of aging while stimulating collagen production for long-lasting results.

CoolPeelTM

CoolPeel is a laser skin treatment that offers many of the same benefits as a traditional CO2 laser treatment but without the prolonged recovery period afterward. CoolPeel is a good option for reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores while also improving the way your skin feels.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels use special solutions to gently lift away dead, damaged skin cells, revealing healthier, smoother, more youthful skin underneath. Available in varying strengths to suit the issue you want to treat, peels can be a good choice for fine lines, sun-damaged skin, and scars, including acne scars.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation

If areas of hyperpigmentation, like age spots, sun spots, or rosacea are bothering you, IPL treatment could be the solution you’re looking for. This treatment uses a different type of light energy to target darker pigments, and it can treat broken capillaries that cause your skin to look reddish and worn.

MicroLaserPeel® skin rejuvenation

MicroLaserPeel uses the power of laser energy to promote skin turnover, helping your skin slough off damaged layers to reveal a more youthful complexion.

Offering a middle ground between a mild chemical peel and more intense laser resurfacing, this treatment can be an ideal choice for people with moderate lines, wrinkles, and creases.

While each treatment offers its own benefits, many people benefit from a combination of treatments designed to address complex issues and maximize their benefits and results. We customize every treatment plan based on your goals and the evolving needs of your skin.
