How Often Should You Get a Facial?

Facials are so popular that millions of American men and women use them on a regular basis to get clearer, healthier, younger-looking skin. Incorporating facials into your skin care routine ensures your skin looks its best, especially when you time your facials for maximum benefit.

At Metroderm DC: Medical, Laser, and Aesthetic Dermatology Center, master aesthetician Danielle Jackson works closely with dermatologists Edward Stolar, MD, and Todd Perkins, MD, to create custom facial treatment plans tailored to every patient at our Washington, DC, practice.

Here’s some background information about facials and how to time your facial treatments for best results.

What facials can do

Facials use a variety of ingredients and application methods to treat an array of skin issues, including:

Most facials work by encouraging dead skin cells to slough off, revealing fresher skin beneath.

Many include moisturizers, nutrients, and anti-aging solutions designed to penetrate the skin. Some facials use extraction methods to vacuum away impurities and deeply cleanse your pores.

After a facial, you need to protect your skin from direct sun and use gentle cleansers and moisturizers to avoid irritation. We work with you to create a skin care routine tailored to your skin type, lifestyle, and other factors.

Timing is everything

With facials, one of the keys to getting the best results is to make sure you don’t overdo it. After most facials, your skin may need a little recovery time to take in nutrients, repair damage, and rejuvenate.

Knowing how long to wait between treatments helps you avoid irritation and other problems.

Chemical peels typically have the longest recovery period. Very deep peels used to treat severe lines and wrinkles usually are only performed once. Medium peels may be repeated after a year or more, while lighter peels can be repeated more frequently.

Other peels, including many of the peels we offer at MetroDerm DC, can be repeated on a regular basis — typically a few weeks apart. In fact, many of these peels achieve their maximum benefits when used as a series of treatments spaced out over a few weeks.

Many peels can be repeated every couple of months to help your skin slough off dead, dull cells and promote skin turnover, revealing healthy skin while reducing sun damage and signs of aging.

A regular facial schedule helps your skin stay glowing and fresh, and it can also help your home skin care products penetrate more deeply.

Get the most from your facials

Before scheduling any facial treatment, we recommend a consultation visit so we can customize your treatment plan to suit your goals. During your visit, we review home care routines that can help your results last even longer.
